On behalf of the Pomona City Council, I proudly welcome you to the Pomona Concert Band's 2019 Summer
Concert Series at the G. Stanton Selby Bandshell in Ganesha Park. The Pomona Concert Band is
a true jewel in the City of Pomona, and we thank them for giving our community 72 years of wonderful
music and entertainment. We commend our musicians, music directors, City staff and volunteers
for their continuous efforts in making there concerts a success every year. Enjoy the music!

Linda W. Taylor has been a member of the Pomona Concert Band since 1968. During that tenure
she has held the Solo Clarinet chair, was Assistant Conductor for several seasons, and since 1983 has
played in the Tuba section. In March, 2006, she was appointed Conductor and Musical Director of the band.
In addition to playing in the PCB she is a founding member and co-manager of the Golden State British
Brass Band, and plays tuba annually in the Colorado Brass Band, as well as in several brass bands in England.
Prior to her retirement in 1998 Linda taught Instrumental Music in the Baldwin Park Unified School District
for 30 years. During those years she garnered a long list of professonal honors and awards and guided
the internship of ten new teachers.

Among the many budget items the City of Pomona has been forced to eliminate is the
direct financial support for the Pomona Concert Band. The City still provides
logistical support such as rehearsal, concert, and office facilities, as well as personnel
to assist with our concerts, for which we are most grateful.
As a result, we turn to our patrons and friends for donations to meet our expenses,
such as music purchases, instrument maintenance and repair, and administrative expenses.
You may support the band by patronizing our snack bar, participating in the 50/50 raffles,
advertising in our summer programs, or by direct donation. Any band member can
give you the necessary information for such support, and, WE THANK YOU!

Dr. Jorge Garcia is the Assisant Conductor for the PCB and has been involved in music education since
1969. He has taught music on all levels from Kindergarten through college. He has conducted
several honor groups including the Memorial Orchestra for President Chiang Kai-shek, the Sino-American
Honor Band, and The Taiwan Youth Symphony Orchestra as well as various honor bands and orchestras in
Southern California. He is a published composer and has written pieces for the Pomona Concert Band
and the Golden State British Brass Band and currently owns his own publishing website, Talent Music Publishers. In 2008
he received his doctorate in Music Education with an emphasis on Lifelong Learning. He has given
presentations in several countries including the International Conference on Lifelong Learning in Budapest,
Hungary. He directed ther Faith Orchestra Camp, Davao, Republic of the Philippines during the summers
of 2013 to 2014. He joined the Pomona Concert Band in 2005 playing tuba.

Dr. James Lytthans has been a member of PCB for nearly 60 years, having joined at age 13.
He retired as a teacher of instrumental music from the Los Angeles Unified School District after 35 years
of service. He is an active professional clarinetist.
Lucas Critchfield teaches music in the Claremont Unified School District. He received his
Bachelor of Music Education from the University of New Mexico and his Master of Music in Percussion from
New Mexico State University.

Christopher Northrop, a product of the Pomona Schools, is currently a music teacher in the
Fontana Unified School District, a position he has filled for 15 years. He graduated from Ganesha
High School, earned his B.A. at California State University San Bernardino. He plays trumpet in
the PCB.
Sarah Silva ...
Stephen Klein is the instructor in euphonium and tuba at Pomona College, and serves as Associate
Conductor. He received his B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley and his M.A. from the
Eastman School of Music, and has been an active free-lance musician and teacher in Southern California since
leaving the Air Force Band of the Golden West where he was tuba soloist and principal arranger.
David Schaafsma, PCB tubist, attended California State Polytechnic University, San Luis
Obispo, from 1971-76 and California State University Long Beach from 1977-78. He is currently
one of the Assistant Directors of the Ontario/Chaffey Community Show Band. He founded and directed the
Sound Machine of the Inland Empire Youth Band based in Upland and Chino from 1984-1999. He also
was the Musical Instructor for the Long Beach Junior Concert Band from 1975 to 1982 and again from 2008
to 2012.
Dr. Miyoshi Feliciano has played trumpet for 42 years, including 13 years with the Pomona
Concert Band. She is a graduate of Berklee College of Music, with a major in Film Scoring.
She subsequently received her doctorate degree in Chiropractic in 1995 and has a private practice in
Whittier, California.

Reading and performing a wide repertoire under skilled leadership promotes their musical growth as
well as supplementing the band's membership. PCB appreciates the support of the Pomona Unified

Mr. Kerry Kline joined the Pomona Concert Band in 2008 and has been in music
education since 2004 when he received his Bachelors of Music, in Music Education, from the University
of Tampa. While there, he studied trombone with Donald Zegal, a trombonist of the Florida Orchestra
and conducting techniques from Dr. Jeffrey Traster. He was a founding member of Pi Mu, a National
Music Fraternity of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and was a sponsor of Tri-M, a high school national music honors
society. He has been a Board of Director of the Pomona Concert Band since 2014 and in 2018, was
appointed an Assistant Director for PCB, bringing with him several years of classroom experience in band
and orchestra conducting.

GOLDEN STATE BRITISH BRASS BAND

The Golden State British Brass Band was organized in 1995 by a group of local musicians, drawn together
by the elegant sounds and broad repertoire of the brass ensemble, popular in Great Britain but relatively
unknown in the United States. The band has performed in concerts throughout Southern California and
for the California Music Educators Association. Special performances are presented to students in
area schools each year. The Band has also appeared at Disneyland, the Nixon Library, and the annual
Queen's Birthday Ball for several years. We are pleased to bring this special musical genre to you.
Mr. Jack Hollander currently teaches at El Toro High School in the Saddleback Unified School Ditrict.
He has a distinguished record as a teacher and music director at high school and college levels. While
earning his music degrees at UCLA he was appointed teaching assistant for bands. He has presented
professional clinics for the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association, for whom he is also
an active adjudicator and clinician at festivals and competitions, as well as having served as a board
member. He has also conducted school honor bands throughout Southern California. He joined the
GSBBB as a cornetist, was later appointed Assiant Conductor, and finally Music Director in 2007. In the
Summer of 2008 he attended the International Brass Band Summer School at Swansea University in Wales, UK,
where he studied the heritage, traditions, literature, and musical styles of the British Brass Band.
August 29th - Final Summer Concert

The Pomona Concert Band was organized in November of 1947 by G. Stanton
Selby. Since that time, the band has become an important part of the music
scene in Pomona. The band performs at major civic events, gives concerts in
Pomiona and neighboring cities, and presents a summer series of nine weekly concerts
in Ganesha Park at the G.Stanton Selby Band Shell. All performances are free
to the public. The band has performed at Disneyland and regional band festivals
as well as two international tours to Europe in 1985 and Japan in 1988.
